Smile

The idea for Smile emerged from a simple contradiction: we live in an age in which people are increasingly expected to appear happy, while being given less and less space to experience their emotions honestly.

A smile is usually understood as one of the most intimate and spontaneous expressions of human feeling. But when it is demanded, performed or socially enforced, it ceases to represent joy. It becomes a mask—a surface used to conceal anxiety, loneliness, anger and grief.

The people in the world of Smile are not simply unhappy. They have been deprived of the ability to express any authentic emotion. Their frozen faces do not represent peace or emotional stability; they reveal the consequences of prolonged repression. Their bodies continue to move, but something within them has stopped living.

I imagined the society in the film as a space from which individuality has gradually disappeared. People remain physically close to one another, yet no meaningful connection exists between them. Their movements are repetitive, their expressions interchangeable and their presence almost mechanical. Life continues externally, while internally, time has come to a standstill.

The painter’s arrival should not be understood as a simple act of rescue. He is the only person capable of imagining another expression on the young woman’s face, but his gesture also carries a form of violence. He paints her smiling even though she does not smile in reality. In doing so, he may be revealing a forgotten possibility within her—or replacing her truth with the image he wants to see.

This ambiguity is central to the film.

The sentence “If you don’t smile, you’re dead” was deliberately constructed to function both as an invitation and a threat. It may be understood as a call to return to life, to resist emotional paralysis and rediscover the ability to feel. But it may also be read as another command imposed upon the individual: proof that even happiness can become an instrument of conformity and control.

The portrait therefore occupies an unstable position. It is both a mirror and a distortion, a possible liberation and a new prison. The woman must decide whether the smiling face represents a hidden part of herself or simply another socially acceptable mask.

Formally, I wanted the film to communicate through bodies, faces, repetition and silence rather than dialogue. Silence, for me, is not merely the absence of speech. It is a space in which social pressure, isolation and the weight of other people’s expectations become audible.

The rigid compositions, restrained performances and repeated physical movements create a world in which human beings appear preserved rather than alive. Against this stillness, the painted smile becomes a rupture—an image charged with both hope and danger.

Smile does not ask why these people no longer smile. It asks what happens when smiling itself is no longer a choice.

For me, death does not begin when the body stops moving. It begins when a person can no longer distinguish between what they truly feel and the expression they are required to present to the world.
