SHORT SYNOPSIS
Ramin, a young man with a congenital disability, dreams of becoming a swimming champion. But when he wakes up, he returns to a reality far removed from his dream.
During a scorching summer in Iran, frequent power outages have become part of daily life. Living with his father on the fourth floor of an apartment building, Ramin finds even the simplest tasks becoming increasingly difficult whenever the electricity goes out.
As his world becomes darker and more restricted with each outage, Ramin searches for his own way to endure the reality around him.
THEMES
Lights of the Inferno explores the relationship between physical limitation, human perception, and the need to find connection in uncontrollable circumstances. Through Ramin’s experience, the film examines the fragile boundary between reality and inner experience, the bond between a son and his father, and the role of music as a way to preserve connection when external possibilities disappear. The film reflects on dignity, dependence, and the human search for meaning within conditions that cannot be changed.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
What brought me closer to making Lights of the Inferno was a question about the moment when a person faces circumstances that can no longer be changed; the moment when external reality falls beyond their control, and the only thing left is the way they choose to confront it.
For me, Ramin is not merely a character defined by a physical disability. He is a human being caught between his body, his dreams, and circumstances he never chose. The opening dream, in which he sees himself as a swimming champion, stands in contrast with the reality he returns to after waking; a distance between the freedom experienced by the mind and the limitations imposed by the body.
The relationship between Ramin and his father reflects, for me, the efforts of two people trying to come to terms with circumstances that neither of them has the power to change.
In the visual design of the film, the use of black and white was intended to create a sense of confinement and to reflect the limited world surrounding Ramin. At the end, the gradual transition into color does not represent a change in the outside world; rather, it reflects a change in Ramin’s experience of that moment.
Connecting the empty oxygen tank and playing the violin is not an attempt to deny reality; it is the moment when, in the absence of external possibilities, music becomes Ramin’s only way of maintaining a connection with life. He does not change the reality of his situation, but for a brief moment he turns to music — the only thing that can still create a connection between him and the world.
Lights of the Inferno is about a person who, faced with limitations he never chose, tries to find a way to continue.
