Sundance Film Festival® 2027

Sundance Film Festival is a major annual event dedicated to independent cinema, organized by the nonprofit Sundance Institute. Highlighting independent voices from the United States and around the world, it provides a highly visible platform for feature films, documentaries, shorts, and episodic storytelling. To put its scale into perspective, the 2024 edition received a record 17,000 film submissions.

WHAT IS NEW FOR THE 2027 EDITION?

The 2027 Sundance Film Festival will take place from 21 to 31 January 2027 and marks the festival’s official move to Boulder, Colorado. Additionally, the festival has announced an expansion of its core competition sections. For this edition, the U.S. Dramatic, World Cinema Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, and World Cinema Documentary competitions will each expand to feature 12 films.
WHAT TYPES OF WORK DOES THE FESTIVAL ACCEPT?
The open call welcomes narrative feature films, documentary features, short films, and episodic projects. For short films, the festival formally accepts a broad range of formats, including scripted fiction, nonfiction, experimental film and video, animation, and music video. There are no overarching theme or genre restrictions; projects are instead categorized by their runtime, financing origin, and format.

WHO CAN APPLY: CATEGORY ELIGIBILITY

Submissions are divided into U.S. and international categories based primarily on financing.
U.S. Features and Shorts: At least 50% of the project’s financing must originate from within the United States.
International Features and Shorts: At least 50% of the project’s financing must originate outside the United States.
Episodic Categories: These do not carry a specific U.S. or international financing threshold and may originate from anywhere.

CATEGORY 01  — International Narrative Feature Films

• Accepted Work Type: Narrative / Fiction Feature Film
• Final Deadline: 21 September 2026
• Runtime: Minimum 50 minutes; no maximum stated
• Key Eligibility / Restrictions: At least 50% of financing must originate outside the United States. Feature projects completed before 1 January 2025 are not eligible. International Premiere status is required. A completed feature screened theatrically or at a festival outside its country/countries of origin before 1 February 2027 is not eligible for open submission. Public non-theatrical availability must also be checked against the stricter category text. Significant non-English dialogue requires on-screen English subtitles.

CATEGORY 02 — International Documentary Feature Films

• Accepted Work Type: Documentary / Nonfiction Feature Film
• Final Deadline: 21 September 2026
• Runtime: Minimum 50 minutes; no maximum stated
• Key Eligibility / Restrictions: At least 50% of financing must originate outside the United States. Feature projects completed before 1 January 2025 are not eligible. International Premiere status is required. Prior festival/theatrical and public non-theatrical availability rules must be checked carefully under the current category text. Significant non-English dialogue requires on-screen English subtitles.

RUNTIME AND ORIGIN CONDITIONS

Projects must be submitted into the correct runtime classifications. Feature films must have a running time of at least 50 minutes. Short films must run under 50 minutes, including credits. Episodic content is separated into two categories: projects with a total submitted running time of 60 minutes or less, and projects exceeding 60 minutes. Furthermore, feature and episodic projects completed before 1 January 2025 are no longer eligible for submission.

PREMIERE STATUS AND PREVIOUS SCREENINGS

Premiere requirements vary significantly across categories.
U.S. Features: Must retain World Premiere status.
International Features: Must retain International Premiere status. For international features, a theatrical or festival screening outside the project’s country of origin before 1 February 2027 makes the film ineligible. Prior non-theatrical public availability (such as television, streaming, or home video) will also void eligibility.
Short Films: Short films completed after 31 December 2025 have no premiere requirement and remain eligible regardless of previous festival screenings. However, short films that were theatrically exhibited or made available online before 1 January 2026 are not eligible.
Episodic Work: Completed episodic projects that have been publicly exhibited or made available to the general public before 1 February 2027 are ineligible.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

A complete application includes a completed submission form and a fully viewable digital screener. Any project with significant non-English spoken dialogue must feature on-screen English subtitles. Additionally, applicants must formally disclose the use of generative AI in their project or submission materials in accordance with festival rules.

IMPORTANT DATES

Submissions are currently open. The final deadlines are categorized by project type:
Short Films: 31 August 2026
Episodic Projects: 11 September 2026
Feature Films: 21 September 2026
Applicants will be notified of their status no later than 4 December 2026.
