FESTIVAL STRATEGY & FILM POSITIONING

An independent Los Angeles festival built around filmmaker-led programming, with dedicated routes for first features, shorts, episodic work and digital projects.
SUBMISSIONS CLOSED / FESTIVAL UPCOMING
The 2027 Slamdance Film Festival takes place in Los Angeles from 18 to 24 February 2027. Submissions close on 6 October 2026, with notification scheduled for 17 December 2026.
Slamdance has been built around independent filmmakers since 1995. Its “by filmmakers, for filmmakers” identity is reflected in the way the programme is selected: a large network of Slamdance alumni filmmakers takes part in reviewing submissions and shaping the festival.
The festival is especially associated with first-time feature directors, low-budget independent cinema and short films with a strong personal voice. Its programme also extends into episodic work, disability-focused programming and digital or interactive projects.
First Features is designed for debut feature directors. Breakouts gives filmmakers beyond their first feature a separate route. Shorts covers narrative, documentary, animation and experimental work, while Episodes, DIG and Unstoppable serve more specific formats and creative contexts.
First Feature, Breakouts and the short-film routes use different eligibility rules for director stage, budget, runtime and distribution history.

Feature films run over 40 minutes. Narrative and Documentary First Feature competitions are open to first-time feature directors with budgets under $1 million. Breakouts is the feature route for directors beyond their debut.
Short films run under 40 minutes and can be narrative, documentary, animation or experimental. The festival also accepts episodic work, digital and interactive projects through DIG, and work within the Unstoppable programme.
Works in progress are accepted, and the current call is open internationally across genres and subjects.
More than 200 Slamdance alumni filmmakers take part in programming, and the festival states that submitted films are watched in full. That peer-led model gives Slamdance a distinctive place within the independent-film circuit.
For feature filmmakers, submission readiness includes director status, budget and distribution history. For shorts, runtime and category fit are the main practical points to prepare.
Slamdance separates first features, later-career features, shorts, episodic work and digital projects by format and filmmaker stage. AD1 FILM can review director status, budget and distribution eligibility for features—or runtime and category fit for shorts—then prepare the submission around the route the project actually qualifies for.
