San Luis Obispo International Film Festival is an independent film festival based on California’s Central Coast, positioned between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Its mission centres on worldwide independent cinema, and its annual programme combines international competition, regional filmmaking, music video, youth work and year-round exhibition through the SLO Film Center.
The festival’s programming spans several filmmaker profiles and formats. Its main George Sidney Independent Film Competition accepts films from around the world, while the Central Coast Filmmakers Showcase creates a separate route for regional filmmakers. Music videos and youth filmmaking are also programmed through dedicated festival strands.
The festival describes its programming interests in terms of perspective as much as format, highlighting thought-provoking documentaries, gripping narratives, diversity and the question of why a filmmaker needed to tell a particular story.
For youth filmmakers, the dedicated route is Filmmakers of Tomorrow, designed for filmmakers under 18 who are still attending elementary, middle or high school. The competition is structured specifically around K–12 filmmaking and is open worldwide.
SLO Film Fest places youth-made work inside an established international independent-film festival while keeping a clearly defined youth-authorship and school-status framework.

Every entry must include a copy of school identification.
The maximum runtime is 7 minutes, and films must have been completed after 1 March 2025.
Music used in submitted films should be fully credited at the end of the film.
Published youth competition awards include Best Documentary, Best Narrative, Best International and Best Animated.
SLO Film Fest is Academy Award® qualifying for Documentary Shorts through its main George Sidney Independent Film Competition. Filmmakers of Tomorrow follows its own youth-competition award structure.
AD1 FILM can review student authorship, runtime, school-status documentation and music credits before submission, helping position a youth-made film within the correct festival route.
