FESTIVAL STRATEGY & FILM POSITIONING
A tailored strategy based on the film’s format, genre, current position and objectives.
Movies that Matter Festival is an annual human-rights film festival in The Hague, bringing documentary and fiction cinema together with dialogue, contextual programmes and industry activity around justice, freedom and social issues.
OPEN CALL
The 2027 Movies that Matter Festival takes place in The Hague from 19 to 27 March 2027. The call welcomes documentary and fiction, from short films to feature-length work, with all lengths accepted. The final submission deadline is 1 November 2026.
Movies that Matter Festival uses cinema as a meeting point for stories about human rights, justice, freedom and social change. The initiative began in 1996 as the Amnesty International Film Festival in Amsterdam, became an independent foundation in 2006 and moved its annual festival to The Hague in 2009.
The festival combines documentary and fiction with talks, contextual programmes and industry activity. Its programme considers both the film’s subject and the way it creates perspective, makes a human-rights issue visible and opens space for discussion.
The current international call welcomes short and feature-length documentary and fiction films that engage meaningfully with human-rights issues.
Films can connect with Movies that Matter through their subject, the people and communities at the centre of the story, or the way they examine power, justice, freedom, inequality and social responsibility. The festival’s competition and Panorama programmes create several routes for work that combines a clear human-rights perspective with a distinctive cinematic approach.

The final submission deadline is 1 November 2026. The final programme is scheduled to be announced at the end of February 2027.
The 2027 call is open to documentary and fiction, from short films to feature-length work. Films of all lengths are accepted, and selected short films have a dedicated Shorts Competition within the festival.
The 2027 call welcomes films completed in 2026 or 2027, as well as films whose world premiere takes place within that period.
Films may apply across premiere statuses, and premiere position can influence final selection decisions. Films previously selected by other festivals remain eligible when that festival appearance took place within one year before the 2027 edition.
For the 2027 edition, theatrical release in the Netherlands and Dutch television broadcast are scheduled after the festival. Online availability before the festival can be through a paid platform; public free online access is reserved for the post-festival period.
Films must be submitted in English or with English subtitles.
The 2027 competition structure includes Grand Jury Documentary, Grand Jury Fiction, Activist Lens, Justice Frame, Dutch Focus and Shorts. Other selected films can be programmed in the Panorama section.
The 2027 competition framework includes the following awards:
The Grand Jury Documentary winner also enters the Academy Award® qualification route for Best Documentary Feature Film.
Selected films are screened from DCP. Publicity materials such as pressbooks, posters, stills, clips and trailers are due by 10 February 2027.
The festival also requests DCP and MP4 delivery no later than two weeks before the festival. English-language accessibility remains required for the screening version.
Preparing these delivery materials early helps keep the film’s press and exhibition package ready for the wider festival route.
Movies that Matter is a strong festival target for films that connect a clear human-rights perspective with a distinctive cinematic approach and a well-planned festival route.
AD1 FILM can review thematic fit, competition positioning, premiere and availability history, subtitle readiness and festival materials, then place the film within a wider submission strategy.
