SUBMISSIONS CLOSED / FESTIVAL UPCOMING
Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is a documentary-focused festival in Missoula, Montana, presented by the Big Sky Film Institute. Alongside screenings of nonfiction work from the United States and abroad, DocShop brings filmmakers into a professional programme of panels, workshops and industry conversations.
The 24th Big Sky Documentary Film Festival will take place in Missoula from 12–21 February 2027. The current film call remains open through the final deadline on 2 October 2026.
The main international submission routes are divided by running time: Feature documentaries are 40 minutes or longer, Shorts run 15–39 minutes, and Mini-Docs are under 15 minutes.
The competition structure also includes the Big Sky Award for films that engage with the character, history, tradition or imagination of the American West.
Documentaries from any completion year may be submitted. If selected, however, the film must not have screened anywhere in Montana before the festival. Previous online screenings do not automatically make a film ineligible, although the festival states that programming priority is stronger for work that has not already reached a wide audience.
Near-final rough cuts are accepted at the final deadline. Big Sky does not guarantee that programmers will be able to review a later updated cut, so the submitted screener should state the intended final running time and the work still to be completed. Selected films must be finished by 1 February 2027.
Preview screeners can be supplied through FilmFreeway, Vimeo or YouTube. Films must be in English or include English subtitles.
Accepted films must have an h.264 (.mp4) screening file available by 15 January 2027. All festival films also require an .srt subtitle file, and films whose primary language is not English must provide an open-subtitled screening version. DCP is not the standard required format, although the festival may request one for particular screenings.
Festival selection does not automatically place a film in competition. The programming committee may select up to 10 films for each competition category, with competition priority given to films premiering at Big Sky without distribution.
The winners of Best Short and Best Mini-Doc qualify directly for Academy Award consideration in the Documentary Short Film category under the festival’s current rules.
For Big Sky, category fit is only part of the decision. Montana premiere status, previous audience exposure and the readiness of the submitted cut can all affect how a documentary enters the festival. AD1 FILM can review Feature / Short / Mini-Doc fit, festival history and rough-cut readiness together, then check the screener, subtitles and presentation materials before submission.
